Sam's early childhood was spent on his father's farm on the outskirts of Eltham. In 1895 the family moved to Maata where after leaving school he worked on the family farm 'Dovedale'. He competed in wood chopping events at the Axeman's Carnival and was interested in other outdoor pursuits. In 1908 he and his cousin Frank went to England. After a second trip that included a visit to South America he returned and began promoting the Gane Milking Machine for his brother Harry. For some years afterwards he farmed at 'Dovedale'. |
